What is this game?

Shikaku is a classic Japanese logic number puzzle game. In this game, players face a grid containing scattered numbers. The objective is to divide the entire grid into rectangles (or squares) such that each rectangle contains exactly one number, and the area of that rectangle equals the number inside it. Designed for logic puzzle lovers, Sudoku fans, and those who enjoy quiet contemplation. With no time limit, it's perfect for brain workouts during leisure time, with games lasting from a few minutes to half an hour depending on difficulty.

How to Play

The interface is a grid board with numbers in some cells. Players click and drag to draw rectangles over the grid. The rules are strict: 1. The entire grid must be covered by rectangles with no empty spaces. 2. Each drawn rectangle must contain exactly one number. 3. The total number of small cells in a rectangle (its area) must exactly match the number it contains. For example, a rectangle with '4' can only be 1x4, 4x1, or 2x2. The level is cleared when the whole grid is correctly partitioned with no overlaps or gaps.

Beginner Tips

  • Start with large primes: Prime numbers like 5, 7, and 11 can only form 1xN or Nx1 rectangles, drastically reducing possibilities and making great starting points.
  • Look for numbers in corners: If a number is in the corner of the grid, its expansion directions are highly restricted, often leaving only one or two possible shapes.
  • Process of elimination: If expanding a number in a certain direction would encompass another number, that direction is invalid; abandon it immediately.
  • Fill the gaps: If you notice small gaps on the edge or middle that cannot be reached by other large numbers, figure out which nearby number must extend to fill them.
  • Use undo wisely: When unsure, draw the most likely rectangle. If you find it leads to a dead end later, use the undo function decisively.

Advanced Strategy

Area and space budgeting: For complex grids, don't rush to draw. Mentally calculate the space a large number must occupy and see if it suffocates adjacent smaller numbers.

Unique solution deduction: Look for cells that say, 'Only this number can reach here.' Once you confirm a cell belongs to a specific number, it provides a crucial clue even if the full shape isn't clear.

The border wall effect: Drawing a long rectangle in the middle creates a 'wall' that cuts off expansion paths for other numbers. Use this to force unique solutions for those numbers.

Common Mistakes

Ignoring prime characteristics: Beginners often target composites like 6 (which can be 2x3 or 1x6) while ignoring a nearby 7 that has only one shape, leading to confusion.

Fixating on one area: Spending 10 minutes staring at a corner where you are stuck, instead of shifting your focus to solve obvious areas on the other side of the screen.

Refusing to reset bad starts: When the last few cells can't be filled, tweaking only the local area. Often, the very first large block was placed wrong, requiring a full reset.

Who is this game for?

Shikaku is perfect for logical thinkers who love number deduction games like Sudoku and Minesweeper. With no time pressure, it's a perfect choice for adult brain training and developing spatial math concepts in children.

Sudoku

Both originate from Japanese logic number puzzles, requiring rigorous deduction to fill grids with no room for guesswork.

Nonogram

Also a grid-based logic game, using numerical clues on the edges to deduce which cells should be filled, testing spatial and logical analysis.

Hashi

Another classic number-connecting puzzle. Requires drawing specific numbers of bridges to connect nodes based on their values, equally logical.
