What is this game?

Sea Battle (Battleship) is a digital recreation of the classic pen-and-paper board game. It immerses you in an intense naval strategic duel where players deploy their fleet on a hidden grid map and use logical deduction and blind guessing to destroy the opponent's fleet before theirs is sunk. It's designed for fans of turn-based strategy, psychological mind games, and classic board games. Each match is fast-paced, usually taking 3 to 10 minutes, making it an excellent choice for exercising deductive reasoning and enjoying competitive fun.

How to Play

The game consists of two phases. In the 'Deployment Phase', you have a 10x10 grid and must place ships of varying lengths (e.g., a 4-cell carrier, 3-cell cruisers) horizontally or vertically. Ships usually cannot touch each other. Once deployed, the 'Combat Phase' begins. You and your opponent take turns blindly firing at each other's grid. Tap a square on the enemy's grid; if it hits a ship, it shows 'Hit' (usually red or fire) and you often get another shot. If you miss, it shows 'Miss' (a splash), and it's the opponent's turn. The first to find and sink all enemy ships wins.

Beginner Tips

  • Scatter your fleet: When deploying, spread your ships across the corners and center of the grid to avoid clustering. Clustering makes it easy for the opponent to find other ships after a lucky hit.
  • Edge strategy: Many beginners like to blind-fire at the center early on. Placing some small ships hugging the absolute edges of the map can sometimes miraculously keep them alive for a long time.
  • Checkerboard firing: When searching for enemy ships, don't shoot randomly. Fire in a checkerboard pattern (skipping every other square). This guarantees you'll find any ship longer than 1 cell.
  • Cross-fire after a hit: Once you get a hit, don't try your luck elsewhere. Immediately target the four adjacent squares (up, down, left, right) until you determine the ship's orientation.
  • Mark surrounding dead zones: In classic rules, ships cannot touch. So when you sink an enemy ship, the perimeter of squares immediately surrounding it is completely empty. Don't waste ammo there.

Advanced Strategy

Track remaining lengths: Always keep an eye on what ships your opponent has left. If only a 4-cell carrier remains, stop shooting in gaps that only have 2 or 3 continuous empty spaces.

Psychological deployment: Intentionally leave a massive, carrier-shaped empty space in the center to bait your opponent into wasting ammo there, while your ships are actually hugging the walls.

Probability heatmap firing: During blind firing, target the square that has the 'most overlapping possible routes for the largest remaining ship'. Mathematically, this yields the highest hit probability.

Common Mistakes

Lining up on the edge: Placing all ships head-to-tail hugging the wall like a train. It seems clever, but once the opponent gets one lucky hit, they can wipe you out blindfolded.

Losing focus after a hit: Getting a hit, missing the next directional guess, and giving up to shoot randomly across the map. Remember, always finish off a wounded prey.

Ignoring rule variations: Different versions have different rules on whether ships can touch diagonally. Failing to check the rules before deploying or firing will put you at a huge disadvantage.

Minesweeper

Although single-player, Minesweeper is also based on using known information in a grid to clear mines (shoot) through deductive reasoning, sharing highly similar core logic.

Fleet Battle

Almost the exact same game, but usually comes with more modern 3D graphics, diverse special weapons (like airstrikes and torpedoes), and a rank promotion system.

Chess

If you enjoy reading your opponent's mind and setting traps in a turn-based grid game, Chess provides a much deeper level of visible strategic combat.
