What is this game?

Pattern is a minimalist puzzle game focused on visual memory and sequence reproduction. Inspired by the 'pattern unlock' mechanics of smartphones, players must observe and memorize a briefly flashing sequence of connected nodes, then accurately redraw that pattern on the screen from memory. The game boasts a clean style with no background distractions, purely testing your short-term memory and observation. Each level's challenge is completed in seconds, making it perfect for a quick brain 'warm-up' while waiting in line.

How to Play

The game interface typically consists of a 3x3 or larger grid of dots. At the start of each level, the game automatically connects several dots with a line in a specific order, drawing a geometric pattern very quickly. After the demonstration, the pattern vanishes, leaving only the blank dot grid. Your task is to touch the screen and trace through the dots in the exact same sequence of start/end points and connections as demonstrated to recreate the pattern. If you hit a wrong dot or mess up the order, you must retry. As levels advance, the grid size may increase, and paths become longer and more complex (e.g., crossing lines).

Beginner Tips

  • Don't just watch dots, see shapes: Don't try to mentally chant 'top-left, bottom-middle, right-middle...'. Try to see the connected lines as a holistic shape, like 'an upside-down Z' or 'a lightning bolt'.
  • Lock onto start and end points: If the pattern is too fast to memorize completely, stare intensely at where it starts and where it ends. Knowing the two ends often allows you to logically guess the middle path.
  • Trace the air with your finger: While the game demonstrates the pattern, hover your finger over the screen and trace its trajectory in the air. This muscle memory assist is far more effective than just watching.
  • Note the drawing direction: Some patterns are symmetrical, but the drawing order is strict (e.g., must be drawn left to right). Always watch carefully how the line 'grows'.
  • Don't close your eyes to recall: Start drawing immediately after the pattern disappears. If you close your eyes to think, the brief visual afterimage will vanish.

Advanced Strategy

Segmented trajectory memory: For extremely long and complex patterns, the brain struggles to remember it all at once. Forcibly split it into two halves, like 'first it drew a triangle, then dragged a long tail'.

Find intersection anchors: Complex patterns often have crossing lines. Use that intersection point as your memory anchor, remembering 'which pass goes through the center'.

Rhythmic memory: Besides shape, the pauses and rhythm during the line drawing can act as memory clues. Treat the drawing process like a short musical beat to remember.

Common Mistakes

Drawing too fast causing misalignments: You remembered the pattern perfectly, but swiped so fast that the system registered a connection to an adjacent wrong node, resulting in an unfair fail.

Lack of focus: Glancing at your phone's battery a second before the level starts, missing the opening move, which ruins the memory of the entire pattern.

Memorizing numeric coordinates: Trying to treat a 3x3 grid like a numpad (1-9) and memorizing passwords (e.g., 1-5-9-8-7). In a split-second demo, this number conversion is highly taxing and error-prone.

Who is this game for?

Pattern is for any player hoping to improve short-term memory, attention, and focus. Its minimalist design makes it perfect for business people doing brain training on a commute, as well as an educational game for kids.

Although a physics drawing puzzle, it also requires players to conceptualize shapes in their minds and draw them with fingers, though it emphasizes physics logic over memory.
