What is this game?

Ocho is a highly strategic card game, acting as a classic variant of the globally popular game 'UNO'. The core objective is to get rid of all the cards in your hand faster than your opponents. It is built for players who love fast-paced board games, psychological mind games, and party entertainment with family and friends. You can play against AI for a relaxing solo session. A single round usually takes between 5 to 10 minutes, filled with unexpected twists and the joy of 'sabotaging' each other.

How to Play

At the start, each player is dealt a set number of cards. Players take turns playing a card that matches the top card of the discard pile by color, number, or symbol. If you can't play, you must draw a card from the deck. The essence of the game lies in special action cards: 'Skip' makes the next player lose their turn, 'Reverse' changes the direction of play, and '+2' forces the next player to draw two cards. The powerful 'Wild' card lets you change the current color, while 'Wild +4' changes the color AND forces the next player to draw four. When you have only one card left, you must press a specific button (similar to yelling UNO), or you'll be penalized with extra cards. The first to empty their hand wins.

Beginner Tips

  • Don't hoard Wild cards forever: Beginners often save Wild cards for the very end. But if someone else wins first, those cards become massive penalty points. Use them decisively when you need to switch to your dominant color.
  • Remember to call 'One card left': This is the easiest rookie mistake. The millisecond you play your second-to-last card, hit that warning button. Getting caught and penalized with two cards ruins your progress.
  • Clear excess colors: If you have a ton of red cards, find an opportunity to play a red card, or use a Wild card to change the color to red, unloading your stock as quickly as possible.
  • Keep matching numbers: If you have a Red 5 and a Green 5, playing the Red 5 when the color is red gives you a pivot point to switch the color to green later using your Green 5.
  • Watch the next player's hand size: If the player after you has only one or two cards, avoid playing colors they might have. Ruthlessly hit them with '+2' or 'Skip' cards.

Advanced Strategy

Chain calculating (if rules allow): In some rule variants, you can play a '+2' on top of a '+2', stacking the penalty for the next poor soul. If you hold a '+2', you can intentionally hold it to stack the trap later.

Card counting and color deduction: Pay attention to when an opponent keeps drawing without playing; it means they desperately lack the current color. If you can, maintain that color to keep them locked down.

Defensive use of Wild cards: If the player before you plays a color that hurts your hand, use a Wild card to forcibly shift the color rhythm. It's not just an attack; it's a defensive move to break their combo.

Common Mistakes

Playing +4 too early: Having other playable cards but throwing a Wild +4 just because it feels good. This exposes your hand too early and wastes your ultimate lifeline weapon.

Unhelpful Reverse cards: Playing a 'Reverse' when the player after you has many cards but the player before you has only one. You've essentially just handed the victory baton directly to the player before you.

Ignoring the board to focus on yourself: Staring only at your hand to empty it, completely ignoring that an opponent has called 'One card left'. Even if it ruins your rhythm, you must force them to draw.
