Mergefish
What is this game?
Mergefish is an addictive casual merge puzzle game that cleverly combines number-merging mechanics with a cute marine life theme. Set on a circular grid array, players must drag and drop identical types of fish together, making them 'eat' each other and evolve into a higher-tier fish. Designed for fans of number logic games like '2048', players who enjoy collection and evolution mechanics, and those seeking a stress-free, relaxing experience. A single session can last from a few minutes to tens of minutes, making it a great mini-game to kill fragmented time and exercise spatial planning.
How to Play
The game takes place in a circular pool divided into multiple sector slots. Your core objective is to continuously create the highest-level fish through merging while preventing the pool from filling up. Fish with different numbers (representing their tier) spawn randomly around or in the center of the screen. You must place these fish into the empty slots of the pool. When three or more fish of the same tier are placed in adjacent slots (or arranged according to specific rules), they automatically merge, evolving into a single, higher-tier fish (level +1) and freeing up the previous space. If all slots in the circular pool are filled and no further merges are possible, the game ends.
Beginner Tips
- Chain merges: Don't settle for a simple merge-3. Before placing a fish, calculate if the resulting upgraded fish will immediately merge with existing adjacent fish of that new tier, triggering a chain reaction.
- Keep highest tiers at the edge: Try to anchor your highest-level fish in a specific area of the pool (like a corner on the outer ring), preventing them from blocking the movement and merging of lower-tier fish in the middle.
- Watch the incoming fish: When placing the current fish, always glance at what fish will spawn next. Decide your current placement based on the next fish's tier to set up your board in advance.
- Don't easily fill empty slots: Empty slots are your capital for maneuvering and merging. Even if you can place a fish, always try to ensure there are 2-3 empty slots available at all times to avoid getting gridlocked by randomly spawned junk fish.
- Use Bomb/Refresh items smartly: The game occasionally provides Bomb (removes an unwanted fish) or Refresh (changes the pending fish) items. Treat them as lifesavers and save them for when you are on the verge of a dead end.
Advanced Strategy
Deliberate stacking (Fish farming tactic): In advanced stages, intentionally place 2 fish of the same tier together but withhold the merge until you can place a third in one move that simultaneously triggers a merge-3 for the adjacent higher-tier fish. This extreme micro-management clears massive space in one go.
Central dispatch zone: If the pool has a center slot, never let a high-tier fish occupy it. Treat the center as a temporary 'trash can' or 'transit hub' for low-tier fish that can't be paired yet, allowing them to radiate merges outwards easily.
Anticipate deadlocks and actively disrupt: When you foresee a guaranteed deadlock in a few moves following standard logic, don't be rigid. Actively abandon a perfect chain plan and intentionally merge a low-tier group in the 'wrong' place to scramble the formation and buy a lifeline.
Common Mistakes
Short-sighted merging: Eagerly merging three low-tier fish the moment you see them, only for the resulting mid-tier fish to get stuck exactly between two high-tier fish, permanently preventing the high-tier ones from combining.
Scattering high-tier fish: Raising a Level 8 fish on the east side of the pool and another Level 8 on the west. When you need to merge them to Level 9, you realize they are miles apart, making it impossible to place a third Level 8 to complete the triplet.
Abusing refresh items: Disliking the starting fish and repeatedly using refresh items early on. In the late game, when the pool is almost full and you desperately need a specific tier fish to save the run, you find you're out of items.
