What is this game?

Ludo is a classic multiplayer strategy board game originating from India, the international prototype of games like Pachisi and Trouble. In its digital version, it perfectly recreates the joy and cutthroat sabotage of family gatherings. Players can face AI or battle up to 3 other players (local or online). Extremely reliant on luck (dice rolling), it also demands planning and defensive strategy. It's designed for fans of social interaction, party games, and competitive fun in a relaxed setting. A full multiplayer match can last 15 to 30 minutes, filled with laughter and occasional 'friendship-ending' moments.

How to Play

The game is played on a square, cross-shaped track board for 2 to 4 players. Each has 4 tokens of their color (red, green, yellow, blue) in their starting base. The controls are simple: on your turn, tap to roll the dice. You must roll a '6' to move a token from the base to the starting square, which also grants an extra roll. Tokens then move clockwise around the perimeter based on the dice roll. If your token lands exactly on a square occupied by an opponent's token, you 'capture' it, sending it back to their base to start over (the most thrilling part!). Multiple tokens of your own on the same square form a 'safe block'. The ultimate goal is to navigate all 4 tokens around the board, up your colored home column, and roll the exact number to reach the center finish. First to get all 4 tokens to the center wins.

Beginner Tips

  • Priority of rolling a 6: Whenever you roll a 6, prioritize bringing a token out of the base rather than moving one already on the board. More tokens on the field mean more operational flexibility.
  • Seek safe squares: The board usually has special squares marked with stars; these are absolute safe havens. If you can't capture an enemy, try to land your tokens on these safe squares to hide from pursuers.
  • Diversify, don't rush a lone wolf: Don't obsess over making one token sprint ahead blindly. If it gets captured back to base, you lose all progress. Try to move two or three tokens alternately to spread the risk.
  • Being just ahead of the enemy is deadliest: If your token is just a few steps ahead of an enemy (especially within 1-6 steps), it is extremely vulnerable. Do everything possible to either sprint away or land on a safe square.
  • Don't rush the home column: When you have a token already in your colored home column, ignore it temporarily; it's absolutely safe. Use your dice rolls to move tokens that are still out in the dangerous main track.

Advanced Strategy

Building a 'Blockade' tactic: If rules permit, land two of your own tokens on the same square. This forms an impassable blockade; not only can enemies not capture you, they can't even pass over you. Use this to choke enemy traffic chokepoints.

Positioning to hunt: If your roll can't capture an enemy directly, position your token exactly 6 or so steps AHEAD of them. This applies massive psychological pressure; if they roll poorly, they are forced to walk right into your jaws.

Managing aggro (Multiplayer): In a 3 or 4-player game, it's a social game, not just dice rolling. If Player A is close to winning, you must actively hunt A. If you only target B, B will retaliate fiercely. Advanced players balance the board and let others fight each other.

Common Mistakes

Blindly capturing: Seeing a chance to capture and rushing in recklessly. After the capture, your token lands exactly in another enemy's strike range, getting picked off like the mantis stalking the cicada—classic greed resulting in huge loss.

Choking your only option: Leaving only one token running outside while the rest are in the home column waiting for exact numbers. This forces you to move that single 'sitting duck' with every roll, completely losing all tactical flexibility.

Ignoring enemy spawn points: Passing right in front of an opponent's base exit and lingering there. If the opponent rolls a 6 to spawn, their very first step will crush you back to base without warning.

Who is this game for?

Ludo is the ultimate party game and family entertainment tool. It heavily relies on luck, so novices can beat veterans. Suitable for all players who love shouting, dramatic twists, and cheerful social interaction.

Similar Games

Monopoly

Though economically more complex, the core experience is highly similar: rolling dice to move on a board, dramatic luck-based twists, and the joy/arguments resulting from 'sabotaging' friends.

Snakes and Ladders

The purest dice racing game. Without Ludo's capture mechanic, it relies entirely on dice luck rising and falling on snakes (backwards) and ladders (forwards), more suited for young children.

Sorry! / Trouble

Classic Western board games. The rules are almost identical in origin to Ludo, with the core fun also being bumping opponents' pieces back to start and racing to the finish.
